New milestones and a chance to renew
Two years ago, we set out to build something that could advance and promote clinical ethics and support the integration of clinical ethics services into health care systems across Australasia. Today CESA is a genuine community of health practitioners, students and trainees, health service staff, scholars and ethicists with a shared commitment to clinical ethics and its role in health care.
We are now opening our first membership renewal period, and I strongly encourage you to remain part of the community.
In the past two years we have supported a series of workshops, conferences and seminars to enable engagement with issues that matter and to foster a community of practice. We have been building our communications and resources to keep members connected as well as supporting broader stakeholder engagement to advance the clinical ethics ecosystem across Australasia. We’re just getting started! We have a growing program of activities planned for the coming year and are working to refine our internal processes to support clinical ethics events and activities and better promote engagement between our services. See our full message about renewal attached to this email.
You can renew online and there are one-year ($50), two-year ($90) and student (free) memberships: https://www.clinicalethicssociety.org/membership.
Since I last wrote, CESA and Sydney Health Law supported what was another successful Sydney Clinical Ethics Intensive, a two-day education and capacity-building workshop that brings participants together with expert speakers in clinical ethics and health law to explore the complex ethical challenges shaping contemporary health care and clinical practice. We are already looking forward to the next Sydney Intensive in 2028.
Coming up sooner, we have the next Clinical Ethics Roundtable later this month (30 June) and in October a new CESA webinar, “So you want to start a Clinical Ethics Service…”.
A/Prof Maria Foundas from Western Australia has been kind enough to take on our next member Q&A and raises some of the key questions we hope to explore in the webinar. We will keep you posted about efforts to organise a clinical ethics meeting ahead of the AABHL 2026 conference in Perth in late November.
Also to flag the inaugural Isaacs Kilham Ethics Forum, honouring the late Professor David Isaacs and Dr Henry Kilham. David and Henry were known and respected across a breadth of disciplines. This important event aims to continue their legacy of learning, humility and curiosity in ethics, advocacy and clinical care, and hopefully inspire others to promote similar values. Due to be held at the Children’s Hospital Westmead on Thursday 15 October, Prof Ian Kerridge is the plenary speaker. More details to come.
As always, we are keen to hear about your news, events and initiatives to share with the CESA community, so please stay connected.
With thanks, Linda Sheahan, President, CESA
